Our second major sight in the Gobi was the so-called "Flaming Cliffs" at Bayan Zag, an eroded badlands of beautiful red sandstone cliffs best known for finds of dinosaur fossils and especially dinosaur eggs.
We passed a number of luxurious ger camps with rather plush looking facilities, but our Gobi Discovery ger camps near Khongorin Els and Yolin Am were clearly the budget option for the touristic hoi polloi like us
. These two camps were situated in some of the most desolate spots in the middle of the desert, perhaps located at spots where wells could be dropped to tap into underground water supplies. It's not that there was much water at either one, though, with taps and showers releasing but a faint trickle of lukewarm water during the few hours the electric generators were running. And don't even think about washing your dirty clothes yourself; the restroom guard is always watching and ready to pounce on you if you try to wash your tidy whities in the sink. No, you must use the expensive laundry service.
