Summer Palace, Beijing

Beijing, Beijing, China
The Summer Palace lies about 10 miles northwest of the heart of Beijing and dates from the mid-1700s. The palace complex is built around Kunming Lake and is dominated by Longevity Hill. Although I went there on a cold foggy day on my first visit to Beijing in November 200, the Summer Palace is another sight I missed on my 2006 visit, so I was eager to take it in again. A few of us from my Dragoman group taxied over together, agreed to meet up at the entrance four hours later to return to town, and scattered about on our own like roaches (as overlanders tend to do when they get into a town). I recommend that if you go to the Summer Palace give yourself a whole day since there's so much to see on the grounds.
