Ajanta, Maharashtra, India
The Ajanta and Ellora Caves are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in northern Mahrashtra state consisting of grottoes carved into cliff faces to house temples with impressive ancient Buddhist art. The Ajanta Caves were carved into cliffs on the side of a U-shaped river ravine between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD and are considered the superior set in terms of painted artistry. Unfortunately, my camera failed to do justice to the paintings in the low light of the caves, and flash photography is forbidden at Ajanta. After visiting the caves I climbed to a viewpoint on the other side of the river for picture perfect views of the horseshoe-shaped gorge.
