Ellora, Maharashtra, India
The 34 rock-cut cliff face caves at Ellora were carved between 600 and 1000 AD along a two mile escarpment near Aurangabad in Maharashtra state. unlike Ajanta where all caves were carved by Buddhist monks, some caves at Ellora were carved by Buddhists, others by Hindus, and several by Jains. While Ellora has little of the painted art of Ajanta it has the grandest rock temple of them all, the massive Kailasa Temple, the world's largest sculpture hewn entirely out of a rock slope.
