Mamallapuram - Seaside Temples in Stone

Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, India
World Heritage-listed Mamallapuram was a major seaport city of the Pallava kingdom in the 6th through 8th centuries A.D. and is known for its marvelous stone temples and rock carvings from that era. What is most impressive about the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas is that even though they look like buildings they are all in fact entirely carved out of solid rock. The sights in Mamallapuram are spread out over a quite wide area around the small town, so it was a good half day walk to visit them all.

The following day on the short drive along the coast north to Chennai we stopped at the Madras Crocodile Bank, a major conservation and research trust that breeds and maintains genetic reserves of most of the world's crocodile species .
