Puri - Eastern India's Holy Hindu City

Puri, Orissa, India
Puri is eastern India's most holy Hindu city because of numerous shrines and the Jagannath Mandir Temple. We arrived quite early from Chillika Lake and spent two nights in the city at a hotel near the beach and away from the incredible commotion of the holy parts of the city. Our visit to the holy shrines was by cycle rickshaw arranged by guide Pulak, a cycle rickshaw being a contraption with a seat for two passengers pushed by the pedal power of a driver/rider. This was just the right speed to take in the chaos of the Grand Road as we approached the temple. Puri reminded me of a riverless, beachside version of Varanasi, the more famous holy city. I guess in Hinduism holiness is necessarily synonymous with complete urban anarchy.
