Kerala's Traveling Village Temple Festivals

Attingal, Kerala, India
I expected to spend my time in Varkala in beach-oriented activities like surfing lessons. However, at the surf shop I noticed a flyer posted for a local temple festival and asked the surf instructors about it. They highly recommended going. The minibus left from a hotel near the beach for a drive somewhere to the southeast of Varkala for a religious procession and festival of which I know not the name of the location or the event. For our roughly $8 charge we were dropped off in the thick of things ad told to be back by 4:00.

It's far better for me to post some of the many pictures and videos I took at the festival than try to describe it . The highlights were the colorful costumes, the procession of elephants, and the shows put on by the Hijras (Indian transvestites who crash events). We followed the procession from village to village through the rice fields, managed to lose track of time, and almost missed the bus back to Varkala. Altogether it was one of my most enjoyable experiences in India.
