Qinghai Hu, Qinghai Sheng, China
Qinghai is a large and mostly empty western province of China that historically part of Tibet. The majority of the population is Chinese and concentrated around Xining, the province's modern capital near its eastern border but the villages are still mostly Tibetan. One of the province’s most notable features in Qinghai Hu, China’s largest lake, apparently at some times of the year one of the best places in the world for watching migrating birds.

We spent three days on the road between Golmud and Lanzhou with two nights of camping in between . Our first camp was near a lake a short distance from the highway a few hours east of Golmud. The second was at a small hotel that allowed for camping near Qinghai Hu lake. The highlight there was the camp meal our guide Jason prepared for us, some of the best Chinese food I experienced in China and very heavy on the spices of his native Sichuan region. There were no notable sights on this stretch of the journey, but the desert and grassland landscapes, pastoral culture and new Chinese industrial facilities were interesting.
