As we had a 10am booking for the Bunker, we had breakfast at around 7:30 and headed off for the train station. To get to Uxbridge on the underground we had to change trains twice. From Victoria station to Oxford Circus and then to Baker Street. There had been a signal failure at Baker Street and trains on the Metropolitan line were 'severely' delayed. We allowed ourselves what I thought was plenty of time but after taking almost two hours with the train just crawling along we arrived at Uxbridge at 9:50. Cutting it close is apparently what we do best! I hailed a taxi because it was too late to walk and besides it had started to rain (you know: water from the sky!)... lol. We pulled up in front of the bunker at 9:58... good timing.
There was only one other person on the tour and so with our intrepid guide we headed the 17 metres underground to the original Battle of Britain bunker
. Of the four bunkers that controlled the battle, this is the only one remaining. It was amazing. We saw where Sir Keith Park controlled the battle. He was born in New Zealand... :) The ops room was mostly looked after by women. Originally the blokes thought the women couldn't handle it but they were amazing. We spent about 2 1/2 hours there. Even me who has no idea about WW2 really enjoyed the visit. Graeme spent most of the time trying to keep the grin off his face.
The rain had stopped by the time we were finished and the other man on the tour kindly drove us back to the station and we caught the three trains back to Victoria station without a hitch. We had a lovely meal in the local pub and are now resting in our tiny room. I can't post a photo of the room, it's too small for the camera!
Off tomorrow on the Westminster walk and a visit to the Churchill War Rooms.
