Port Severn to Swift Rapids

Tuesday, September 03, 2013
Swift Rapids, Ontario, Canada
After a 100+ mile day yesterday, we meandered only 16 miles today which included our first locks. The first was Port Severn #45 which is the system's smallest lock. The lock through went smoothly for our first try at it. Next was the Big Chute Railway.  We drove the boat into the slings of a giant travel lift on rails. Then the railway took us up, out of the water, over a road to the next level of water where it went back in, launching us. It was an exciting ride.   Our third lock of the day was Swift Rapids lock # 43, the largest lock on the waterway with a lift of 47 feet. We stopped for the day, then, at the top of the lock at a very beautiful, remote and quiet dock/campsite for boaters. We’ll leave early tomorrow and see how far we’ll get.
