Lovesick to Scott's Mills Lock 19

Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
Today dawned brisk, cool and sunny, and just got better as the day progressed. We only covered 25 Miles today but we worked hard as we went through 10 closely spaced locks. These included the infamous Peterborough Lift Lock, the largest lock of it's kind in the world.
This lock works pretty much on the same principle as the Kirkfield Lift Lock with two chambers filled with water. One goes down as the other is raised. The upper chamber is filled with a foot more water than the lower in order for it to go down and lift the other.   We entered the Peterborough lock at the top. We were the first boat in so we had a front row seat to the vista from 65 feet in the air. Because the lock chambers don’t get filled to change levels, we were able to tie the boat up and be free to move about and take pictures. But we had to be quick as the 65 foot lowering takes only a couple minutes.

We are docked for the night at Scott’s Mills lock 19. We’ll leave in the morning to cross Rice Lake. As usual we are not sure how far we’ll get, but the next lock, at Hastings, is 37 miles away. We hope to get there.

So far our trip has lived up to our expectations. The scenery is spectacular and we have met some very nice fellow cruisers. Oh, and Charlie didn’t jump ship today.
