Brrrrr! Clear and cold last night. We had a full moon under a clear sky but it got down to 42 degrees. The morning was cold with sea smoke coming off the water which made a beautiful morning cruise. We left the dock at 7:30 to go through a special bridge opening at 8:30. Normally the bridge wouldn't open until 10:00, but an overnight cruise boat, the Karwartha Voyager, paid to have the bridge open early. If we could be there when she went through we could sneak through as well. And that’s what we did. By this manouver we were able to get to Jones Falls locks for their first lock through at 10. Jones Falls is another flight lock made up of four locks in succession. The process goes fairly quickly. It took about an hour to do the four locks. It’s tiring, though, with a lot of boat and line handling. We went up three more locks before calling it a day at Newboro lock # 36 at mile 87. We stopped early again, about two o’clock, to rest up and maybe do some shopping in the small town of Newboro. We biked about a half mile to town to find two restaurants and one shoe and clothing store. Kind of a dud.

We had another beautiful day, though. Charlie got a bath on deck in the warm sunshine so he’s smelling sweet again.

We’re at the highest point on the Rideau, so tomorrow we start down. When we enter the locks the water will be let out to lower us (instead of filling to lift us). As we go downbound the buoys change sides (important to remember). Until now it’s been red right returning.
