Inverness, Scotland, United Kingdom
Our first walk through town brought us to the top of the hill where Inverness Castle commands a view of the surrounding hills. We noticed poorly designed "newer" buildings clashing with attractive older structures such as the castle and the church.  Even though we were there at the beginning of the busy tourist season, we also noticed a large number of private homes, B&B's, and offices for sale or rent suggesting that the economy is hurting.  For a tourist oriented economy Inverness is sorely lacking in decent restaurants and cafes.

The outcome of this is on both nights we scrounged up some pre-cooked chicken, cucumber, carrots, baguettes, ham and cheese from the local Tesco supermarket . We dined in both nights, picnic style in our comfy B&B. The only tricky part was cutting a cucumber with a plastic serrated knife! We certainly didn't starve. Once again we were spoiled by full Scottish breakfasts expertly prepared by our proprietress. There was enough bacon served to sneak some away for sandwiches on the train. By-the-way...the "bacon" here resembles high quality ham!

The highlight of our visit was a lovely excursion on rented bicycles following the unnavigable Ness River and adjacent Caledonian Canal built in the early 1800's. Although the canal was not a commercial success because of the advent of the railways, it is now an important waterway for leisure, power, and sailboats transiting coast to coast across Scotland. The Caledonian Canal includes the famous Loch Ness.

That's it from Inverness. We're looking forward to hiking around The Lake District. See you there!
