Zaqatala, Zaqatala, Azerbaijan
There's one last city in this northwestern corner of Azerbaijan... and he feels he needs to visit it for my tour to feel complete. On the way to Zaqatala, the pavement ends and the bus gets more and more crowded. We pass what looks like anothe Gypsy camp, and some folks that look like Roma climb onboard. He observes, but doesn't sense any tension between the the Azeris and the Roma.

Suddenly the bus stops and they all have to get out . Apparently the bus is too big to cross this bridge, so they walk across and onto another bus on the other side... and finally reach the outskirts of Zaqatala. Here he takes his video clip with another bridge across a rushing stream in the background, sort of symbolic of this lush region snuggled next to the mountains.

In Zaqatala, the central park/plaza is still being built, with a statue of a bearded fellow in the front. Up the hill is a large walled in castle like area, but no way to get inside, so he settles for a tour through a dreary Soviet style apartment block area, with clothes hanging from the lines high, high above.

Kids are heading back to school today, the boys dressed up in pressed shirts and ties from first grade on up. Like in Turkey, children are trained to look classy from a very early age. It's nice to see that poverty doesn't necessarily mean one must give up his sense of dignity...

And that was Zaqatala... With Russia to the north and Georgia to the west and south, he has no choice but to head back east.
