2064 Approaching the Border

Las Matas de Farfán, San Juan, Dominican Republic
Day 3-028
3 hrs, 1 .3 kms

La Matas is my first town so far that's not a "revisit" from 2006. Here I notice for the first time young men just hanging out in the plaza. My suspicion is that it's because I'm approaching the Haitian border. A lot of people cross legally and illegally... they don't all find jobs...

On the wa-wa, a young fellows gets to talking with me. He's Haitian... but he's hasn't come here to work... he works in tourism in Barbados--and loves it there. Nice to encounter a success story that doesn't involve the United States for a change...
