2084 Practicing my Italian

Cabrera, Dominican Republic
Day 3-037
4 hrs, 2 .6 kms

I wasn't planning to stop in Cabrera, but as the wa-wa approaches the town I figure... hell, why not? I'm in no rush...

Good choice. It starts out as a pretty generic little semi-touristy town. But the coast is quite different. All jagged coral cliffs, with fierce waves eating away at their base... the lips of the cliffs reaching precariously out into the water.

Not a lot of tourists here, but there is a nice little restaurant at the end of the street. Looks like a good place to grab some lunch. As a look over the options, the owner/chef comes out eager to explain his specialties to me.

I notice his Spanish has some Italian in it.

"Sei Italiano?" I ask

His eyes get big. "Don't tell me your Italian!" he exclaims and starts talking with me eagerly. He tells me he's from Biella in the Alps and just moved here to Dominican Republic to open his restaurant.

"Why would you leave the beautiful Alps and move here?" I ask

"I'm crazy!" he exclaims with a twinkle.

As I eat my seafood meal, gazing out to the crashing waves... watching this fellow hurry back and forth to greet all his customers... I imagine what that life might be like... Leaving Italy to start a new life in Dominican Republic... just because....
