2092 Another Touristy Town

Boca Chica, Dominican Republic
Day 3-040
4 hrs, 2 .6 kms

Coming to Santo Domingo from the north, I'm impressed by how much industry there is. It does seem that this country makes a serious effort to be as industrially and agriculturally self sufficient as possible... Also, there are lots of overpasses--although it's still not enough to keep the traffic running smoothly.

Finally we reach the transportation hub of Santo Domingo--a whole bunch of little bus stations right smack in the middle of the most crowded part of the city. I'm not exploring Santo Domingo quite yet though, I still have the eastern side of the county to visit, and only 2 days left... So I make my way through the maze of street stalls until I find the wa-wa heading to Boca Chica.

Matthew and I visited Boca Chica in 2006, arriving at night to encounter a small mob of girls who surround you, one of them distracts you while the others try to pick your pockets. A pretty crazy place at night .

In the daytime though it feels like a more tranquil tourist trap, with folks relaxing on the shady beach with perfectly calm shallow turquoise lagoon, with a mysterious strip of narrow islands separating it from the rough open sea. It is quite a refreshing contrast to the pollution and bustle of Santo Domingo--and unlike other beaches towns here in DR, this one caters to tourists and locals alike, with Santo Domingans heading out here for the day with on wawas arriving every couple of minutes.

A swim in the lagoon would really be nice.... maybe check into a hotel here and just relax for the rest of the day... But I already did that in 2006, and I still have a number of new places to discover... and I have done a good bit of swimming on this trip already... So reluctantly I head on my way, just taking a videoclip of me holding the guitar knee deep in the lagoon...
