2131. A Full Day's Hike

Wednesday, April 27, 2016
Mantsebo, Lesotho
Day 3-064
6 hrs, 4 .3 kms
Day Totals: 16 hrs, 29.3 kms

The road south is a long, flat valley, passing Lesotho's international airport. All along the way is a huge underground pipe carrying water from Lesotho's reservoir to South Africa. Here there are some productive stretches of farmland--but the quality of the farming, in my opinion has a bit too be desired. The corn stalks are too far apart, too full of weeds... and, why not grow something other than corn? Something that doesn't require so much water and wears out the soil so much...

Compared to the mountains of Morocco, where I see people growing food in tiny plots amidst the rocky crags, Lesotho does have, I think, enough flat land to grow food and feed itself... but it needs new techniques to do so... Drip irrigation perhaps? But I don't sense there's a real interest in investing in agriculture here. Perhaps because it's so much simpler for people to go work in South Africa...

A couple more friendly encounters along the way... A woman who follows behind me for miles and miles... can't afford to take the minibus home from work perhaps?... A couple of kids on bicycles stop to listen to my songs, perched atop the water pipeline...

Finally, as dusk settles I realize I'm not going to find anywhere to stay on foot. I hop on a minibus to Morija, where I hear there are a couple of guesthouses...

It been a wonderful day of walking. I would like to come back and continue this hike all across the country...
