The Sawdust War

A bit further west, the Traveler reconnects with another branch of the Susquehanna River: the West Branch. Here in South Williamsport, there's a footpath where he can soak in the riverside experience once again. The tranquil scenery has little left of what was once a bustling, industrial region. There were many jobs here at one time, but things were not always easy. A plaque tells of "The Sawdust War", when Pennsylvania passed a law limiting the workday to 10 hours, the sawmills still tried to make men work 11-12 hours. When they went on strike, there was a confrontation between them and the strike breakers, and so the national guard was called, and the striking workers were arrested... and the 12 hour work day continued.

So basically, the government took the side of the mill owners, even though they were breaking the law by overworking their laborers ...

It took many more years for workers rights to be the de facto law of the land. Now South Williamsport's only claim to fame is that it's the site of the Little League World Series—which seems a bit surprising, considering that there aren't any major airports around—or a whole lot of lodging it seems...
