Back into Coal Country

Snydersburg, Pennsylvania, United States
It's only a 2 day hike down to Pennsylvania's capital Harrisburg. But for some reason, the Traveler feels like taking his time, soaking in this beauty and culture of this region a bit more. So instead of following the Susquehanna south, he heads east, along a long, straight, narrow valley... back into Coal Country again. Like the Scranton region, this region had thriving communities back in the heyday of coal mining. But unlike Scranton, it doesn't seem that this region has managed to reinvent itself. The Traveler is curious to see what has become of these boom and bust coal towns east of the Susquehanna.

He follows a quiet road with forest on both sides . But it is not just forest, upon closer look, you find there are enormous hills of black coal mine waste, not with trees growing on top. Slowly, nature is taking over again. Snydertown has little wealth left to show. Even the borough building looks like it was forgotten years ago. Here the Traveler pauses by the stream, pulls out his guitar, and dedicates a song to the rise and fall of modern man...
