1845. Not Much History Left

Paxtang, Pennsylvania, United States
6 hrs, 15.7 kms
After Hummelstown there's a sign pointing to a nature trail--definitely looks better that highway walking . But it just does a little loop around a swamp, so I quickly lose interest. From here on the road gets pretty boring, through a long industrial/big box commercial stretch. Here I cross over a railway loading area where containers are unloaded off of trucks and onto railway cars.

I have heard lately of there being a push to use rail more as a more enviromentally friendly way of moving freight. But just looking at how time consuming it must be to transfer containers from truck to rail and back to truck again, it seems pretty clear that trucking is still going to be the way to go for now. I do see a UPS container on the railcar... so I guess it can't be too slow going this route...

Across the railway, I hit Derry Street and 63rd, which means I have 50 more blocks to walk. It's mostly middle class house--and from the signs and shops it seems there's a sizeable Vietnamese community here.

And then I reach Paxtang--a suburb that is a borough, therefore, by my rules making it a separate town. Paxtang is the site of one of the oldest colonial settlements in Pennsylvania--although none of that is apparent today. Now it's just a suburb that blurs in with the surrounding suburbs. Other than an odd looking municipal building which consists of an old theatre and what looks like a firehouse, not much unique to see here.

So that's 3 new suburbs/towns explored today. And nothing really special or historically preserved about any of them.

Darn. I miss the suburbs of Paris...

And with that, I reach the border of Harrisburg.
