1906. A Delicious Lunch

Carenage, Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago
10 hrs, 6.6 kms

It's a magical thing to wake up for the first time on a boat in the middle of a beautiful harbour surrounded by jungle covered mountains . I climb outside to the bow to soak it in... and take a selfie, of course.

It's been an amazing experience. But I must admit, I know this life is not for me. I eager to set foot on land where I can move about freely. I head to shore where I continue the hike that I started yesterday. I don't think I'm going to do a Superhike all across Trinidad, but I should at least do a hike connecting Chaguaramas-Petit Valley-Port of Spain.

A very different feel today than I did on my first wilting hike from Port fo Spain to Petit Valley. It's a little overcast, so the temperature is tolerable, and much of the time I'm walking along the sea, which somehow is more conducive to walking. These aren't postcard-perfect beaches, but still beautiful, surrounded by lush forest, and a couple of locals enjoying the water.

I find a tree to strum under, and--sure enough--am soon joined by a couple of construction workers who come to hear my songs . Playing music in Trinidad is definitely the way to connect with people here in Trinidad.

"You're here for the carnival, right?" It's just assumed that I will not want to miss Trinidad's signature event.

On down the road I reach the town of Carenage, where I follow a sidestreet and spot a simple local eatery. Good timing. As soon as I go inside, it starts pouring rain. Once again, it's a delicious platter with 6-7 portions and a particularly delicious sauce on the meat. I'm definitely enjoying the food here in Trinidad.

The rain stops I head outside. Oddly, with the humidity it actually feels hotter now than before. Not a problem... I cotinue down the road until I reach the mall, officially completing my Port of Spain-Petit Valley-Chaguaramas hike.
