1921 The Arawak Stone Carvings

Duquesne, Saint Patrick, Grenada
4 hrs, 4 kms

Today I'm going to hike north from Non Pariel, to the top of the island, then loop around to the east side and see how far I go . I'm not going to. I'm getting a bit better at hiking in tropical heat--as long as I take plenty of breaks along the way.

It's quiet as I follow the coastal road north. Every village has at least 2 or 3 bars, but they're empty now. One has paintings of Obama, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Osama bin Laden together. A rather ecclectic group!

It's not long and I reach the fishing village of Duquesne with a beautiful beach--undisturbed except for colorful fishing boats. At each edge of the beach jungle covered boulders reach out to the sea... there's a lagoon with a mini-river connecting it to the ocean... and fishermen are hauling in their catch of the day...

This place is pure poetry.

I decide offer to help the fellows haul in their catch, which looks like a game of tug of war with the sea, as 7 of them pull the rope inch by inch hauling in their giant nets . It's a long process, and I start to wonder if I'm actually helping or getting in the way. Finally I give up before the actual haul appears...

Postnote: Next day I came back to check out the Arawak rock carvings. I figured my trip would not be complete without getting a glimpse of what little is left of the indigenous culture. I met a couple fo fishermen who were waiting for the surf to calm down. After strumming for a bit (one of them played a cool original reggae tune he'd composed) he took me to see the spiral shaped carvings at the base of a boulder.

I take a pause and try to imagine what Grenada was like before the invaders from the Old World arrived...

1922 Heading Inland (Grd 015)
Feb 3, 2015, Chantimelle
2 hrs, 8 kms

After Duqesne, the road winds inland, along a rocky stream. It's a different feel, after days of following the coast. You feel more immersed in the jungle which gets even more dense.

In the scattered village of Chantimelle, I find a quiet spot by the stream for my concert and videoclip.
