Byera Village, Charlotte, Grenadines/St Vincent
2 hrs, 3 kms

Byera is another cozy, dense fishing village, followed by a steep rocky hill . There's a tunnel through the mountain with a sign explaining its origins. During the French rule, the northern lands were reserved for the Carib natives. But when the British came, they forced the Caribs into exile and set up plantations in the north. Then in 1813 this tunnel was buit by slaves in order to ease the transportation of sugar cane and other produce from the northern plantations down to the south.

I feel a bit self conscious sitting next to this sign and painful reminder of the relationship between European colonizers, natives and African slaves. Some of the people who pass seem a bit less friendly than usual... I wonder if they're thinking of this as well...
