Georgetown, Charlotte, Grenadines/St Vincent
2 hrs, 3 kms

Down the hill is another flat stretch where I discover St Vincent's second largest town, Georgetown . Here is where you can still see a lot of the damage done by storms, floods and hurricanes that have afflicted this side of the island (oh--not to mention a volcano that has the nasty habit of erupting from time to time). Here many of the houses facing the coast have been abandoned and there are long empty stretches where houses used to be. Some of the streambeds show signs of serious erosion due to recent floods.

Considering the natural hardships of this side of the island makes you wonder why people would even want to live here. But there is still a little bit of a Main Street left--there's even a little shop/cyber cafe which I am in need of... but it has one computer and it doesn't work...

I figure this is my best chance to get a decent lunch, even though it's still a bit early. I find the typical homestyle eatery and wait for the food to finish cooking. There's a cluster of rowdy young folks drinking nearby and one of them comes over to talk to me repeatedly, making me a bit uneasy. These look like the kind of young folk Kim was talking about who just "lime" (loiter) all day, with no jobs or prospects for a better future.

I imagine that they've got a lot of anger and frustration that could eventually simmer to the surface.
