1947 In the Shadow of the Volcano

Orange Hill, Charlotte, Grenadines/St Vincent
1 hr, 2 kms

After Georgetown, the road gets very quiet . Once outside of the town I feel much safer. Any folks I meet out here will be simple, hard working farmers. This area does have a good bit of arable land near the coast and it actually feels underdeveloped--for a good reason. The last eruption was in 1979 and killed some 1,600 people. This was not only a tragic loss of life, but it also wiped out the last large Carib community here in St Vincent. Although there are plenty of people of mixed Afro-Carib descent, there's not a significant distinctly Carib culture here any more. The volcano finished off the destruction started by the Spanish, French and British...

As I walk along I look for any traces of that culture. I do notice some physical characteristics that are more Carib than African... but not much else.
