Anse La Raye, Saint Lucia
3 hrs, 1 km

Unlike the other islands, St Lucian vans don't leave until full--which is a problem for people who need a lift at villages along the way . But then I notice, St Lucia really doesn't have villages. Unlike Grenada and St Vincent, with little hamlet dotting the landscape all along the way, here it seems there are just towns... and then jungle. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of cultivation going on either.

But the country is clearly serious about tourism. At least half of the mini-buses we pass are filled with tourists, not locals... being shuttled across the island to see the main sights. All along the way there are places with activities for tourists... jungle trekking... ziplining... snorkeling... St Lucia, it seems is more for the tourists that want to come do stuff, not just relax at the beach.

I get off in Anse la Raye, the capital of the next province south. Unlike my previous three islands, I don't have any Couchsurfing arrangements here, so I'm going to have to figure it out as I go along.

The first thing I notice in Anse la Raye is a stream of sewage running by the road. There's a dark side to this island as well, it seems...

Here the houses are pretty basic, mostly of wood. A fishing town, Anse la Raye has a nice beach, with cliffs rising on either end. Not a lot going on in the middle of the day, so I figure I'll go ahead and grab some lunch and chill for a bit and enjoy another homestyle meal of rice, beans, plantains, breadfruit, chicken, salad and macaroni casserole.
