As I make the short walk through Orrstown, a cheerful older lady sweeping gravel off the side of the road seems interested in a chat .

"I'd better sweep these up before a car comes by and skids on them."

"So how have things changed here in Orrstown?" I ask.

"I move here in 1944" she points to the house behind me "things were much different then. Neighbors would visit each other--young people don't want to do that anymore."

She points down the street, "there used to be 5 groceries stores here... now there are none"

"Did Walmart kill them?"

"Somebody did!" she chuckles.

I'm enjoying this conversation, but finally it's time for me to go. I take the road towards the mountain, and begin my hike.
