Rubber Plantations

Ao Luek, Krabi Province, Thailand

Although the weather was a bit overcast it's fine for me cycling, it only takes me a couple of days to get over to Krabi and across to Koh Phi Phi which is where I want to stay for a couple of days after my last visit which only lasted a few hours, it gave me a taste of the place .

So basically I cut straight across the country heading for Krabi and thankfully manage to stay off the main highway altogether until the last 20km. It’s a nice couple of days through many rubber plantations, stunning scenery and lots of shouts and waves from the Thai people. Initially I thought of heading to Koh Lanta and across but after my hotel told me to head straight for Krabi which is the main route over and I’m glad I did. I fancied seeing Krabi again and some of the many islands and it was a beautiful few days.

I got talking to locals on one of the rubber plantations trying to gain a wee bit of insight into their process, it’s fascinating. As far as I can tell, they tap the trees collecting the sap or latex in a small pot which looks handmade, the sap runs for around six hours before drying up which means they need to tap the tree again for further rubber. Sheets are made which they lay out to dry but this is probably the extent of what I learned although I have seen this process in a few countries .

I found a hotel half way to Krabi which was so sweet with the family inviting me for dinner with them and their daughter which was such a cutie didn’t leave my side to extent where she was crying when it was bed time I was going back to my room. Sweet, sweet girl, she was only two and dived into my room jumping onto the bed obviously wanting to hang out with her new pal Aunty Clare before dad managed to console her, taking her back home! Dinner was lovely and the wee one was feeding me as well as herself so the family was all taken with her antics, I reckon it’s just that I was way off the beaten track that they don’t get western tourist here often!

Next day I strangely had a western woman passing me on bicycle while I had stopped to take a picture, she stopped asking if I was the new teacher? She is waiting on someone to replace her colleague and thought I was her, we chat for a while and it turns out she’s the only foreigner around, and she never sees anyone else even passing through!

The closer I get to Krabi it changes though as it is a well known tourist area but I’m glad I decided not to stay but head straight to Koh Phi Phi, even though I know it’s a tourist island, the scenery and clarity of the water is absolutely unbelievable.

Here’s to a few adventures in the sun!
