Lost at Sea

Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

It's been a heart breaking week ... although friends Joe and Anita are safe (thank God), Coral Kuching is lost and lies at the bottom of the Andaman sea.I was loving having Joe and Anita back at the marina, they sailed over for a few days to see friends that were in Langkawi, Tony and Kim and meanwhile celebrated both their birthdays. We had a lovely catch up from Scarboro'Friday's to Wonderland and The Pier and it was nice meeting their friends. They pulled up next to Cat Chi which I'm staying on and we resumed our morning coffee's and catch up, it's like having family home, I miss them when they're gone. I borrowed cleaning stuff and gave Cat Chi a good clean and even helped Joe lift in new batteries as the boat was flat. He started the engine and everything was charging well, so after our last wee coffee morning I threw off the lines of Coral Kuching and bid them farewell, waving them off the dock at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.I pottered about all day and was really surprised to see them sitting at Charlie's Bar around 5 o'clock with Maritime Malaysia t-shirts on? I thought they had broken down somewhere and were rescued but it was far worse ...They went to the fuel dock in Kuah but as no-one was there they anchored off an island and went for lunch and a swim at one of the beaches. They were having a swim when Anita thought she saw smoke coming from the boat... sure enough seconds later it caught and the whole boat went up in flames. They watched in horror as their home was lost at sea. Flames 40 foot high, heavy black smoke as the boat was fiberglass, they watched as the keels fell into each other, the mast was lost, and their home gone...All I can think of is thank goodness they were off the boat when it happened, and that they had no time to try and get back. They dialed emergency services and Maritime Malaysia and the Bomba arrived and did what they could. As sailor's thankfully Joe and Anita had their grab bag with them which is a common requirement, normally a dry bag with torches, phones, wallets etc. and thankfully their passport were at the bottom too. Maritime Malaysia took charge and helped them completing paperwork and reports and will conduct checks on how the fire started etc. by diving on it and may even try to rescue items lost. It's a heart wrenching time for Joe and Anita and I really feel for them and their loss. You'll see from previous blogs Coral Kuching was frequently visited and has been in my life the past year and a half and I'm finding it difficult to think of her now lost.Although to early to make any decisions about what's next, I wish them both health, happiness and love for whatever they decide to do. Love you guys, thank you for being safe and well.
