Teotihuacan Pyramids and the Basilica

Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal, Mexico
Today was a short trip, about an hour, outside of Mexico City, to the Teotihuacan Pyramids... Nestled in a valley there are three uncovered pyramids in total.

Unlike the Egyptian pyramids, the Aztec used these for worship . Each pyramid symbolising a god... And in this case the God of the Sun and the Moon

Built 1800 years ago, we were lucky enough to climb the sun and moon... The Aztecs believed that everything went in pairs... Very ying and yang... So the pyramids were in pairs, sun and moon...

The Aztec city was 27square kilometres in size, and had a population of approx 175000 people, and many believe that this, was the primary cause of why the city was abandoned... Sustaining that much life, needs a lot of water, and the effect of deforestation, to build the city, reduced rainfall, and the rivers and lakes dried up....

An amazing place, with some original murals uncovered, the carvings and stonework...They were generations ahead of the rest of the world technologically, the city had an advanced sewer network, plumbing and toilets in the houses...

Off the the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe .. A replacement Basilica built in 1976, with amazing architecture...

The original basilica, just next door, had shifted and sunk so much it was no longer safe...

The story goes, that after the Spanish invaded, a local Aztec man, who had been converted, travelled each week past this location to go to church...

On one particular day he was visited here by Santa Maria... When he explained this to the Spanish bishop, he was dismissed, why would the lady visit such a lowly commoner... The bishop explained that you need to get proof... Off the man went again, and the lady presented him with flowers... He returned to the bishop with The flowers, which were in fact Spanish roses, not seen in Mexico and especially not in winter.... Upon the mans dress was the image of Santa Maria... The cloth still hangs in the church today for all to see....

Outside of the Vatican, it is the most visited catholic site in the world.

Interesting...

Next is Cuernavaca and Taxco...

The pyramids look amazing. Wonder how long it would to build those now with current build permit process and union involvement
