Uffizi again

Florence, Tuscany, Italy
We had an eventful night. Garth decided to dive headlong down the stairs from the bedroom to the bathroom in the middle of the night, knocking over chairs and moving the big heavy dining room table clean across the room. I can't believe he didn't break any bones (or worse!) although he has some great bruises! The steps are very steep and quite narrow, and we have been worried about missing a step in the dark. We realised that we haven't got a clue how to ring an ambulance here, so that's our homework for today!

We headed back to the Uffizi this morning and this time it opened at 8 .15am as scheduled. We took a leisurely stroll around the paintings that we didn't get to last time, including a number of fabulous Titians (Tiziano) and some quite dark and forbidding Caravaggios (usually of people having their heads chopped off). Again we were amazed that there was hardly anyone around - all the tour groups obviously start around 9am.

In the afternoon we headed to a great little pastry shop next to the Santa Croce Church, but it was absolutely packed so no pastries for us - boo hoo! Instead we wandered down every little road and alley we could find, looking in shop windows, checking out the incredibly old buildings, towers, churches.... It seems so strange seeing buildings that have been around since the early 1500s, and wondering what it was like being in Florence back then.

After dinner we headed up the Piazzale Michelangelo so that we could see the lights of Florence. On the way we passed dozens of tiny little hot air balloons, complete with what appeared to be little fires, which had been let go from the San Miniato Church near the lookout. We don't know what the significance was of the balloons, but they were certainly very cute!

Hopefully tonight will be uneventful and there will be no more falls down stairs! But I don't think it will be quiet - the bars around here are absolutely buzzing, and there is a lot of noise coming from a soccer match at a nearby stadium.
