Last day in Atrani

Atrani, Campania, Italy
We had another beautiful sunrise, and after sitting outside for a while, we walked up the steps to a church sanctuary, high up on the other side of the ravine to where our apartment is in Atrani. There are so many tiny little paths running through the houses that you can get quite lost and end up somewhere quite different from where you wanted to be! Thankfully we found the right path quite quickly (unlike yesterday when I led Garth astray trying to find the path to Ravello!!).

We took numerous photos of Atrani from the walk, as well as of our apartment, and I was quite amazed how big the town actually is when you get above it . From down near the main square, it seems quite small. And there are houses all the way up the hills, with endless stairs the only means of getting to the front doors (not even a scooter could get up stairs!). No wonder the people are so fit, and the women have such slender legs! Even the owner of our apartment, who must be more than 70, hared up the stairs to our apartment when we arrived, carrying one of our small suitcases (much to Garth's chagrin!). However, we had a bit of a shock last night when some very large Americans arrived via the small lift which opens either onto our kitchen, or onto the hallway between our apartment and the next apartment. We thought the lift was a tiny service elevator which was used to bring up supplies into the rooms, and were quite startled when we heard booming voices inside it, sounding like they were in our kitchen! Obviously these Americans had no intention of taking the 250+ steps up and down.

There are quite a lot of people on the beach today and all of them doing their best to get as brown as possible . The sun here is not as strong as at home, and despite the temperatures being in the high 20s, I still don't have a red nose! It is still very odd seeing people sun baking for hours on end, sometimes even asleep in their bathers.

In the afternoon we walked into Amalfi across the hill top and small paths (we came home through the tunnel which we have only just found - it starts alongside a parking area in Atrani, and comes out in Amalfi a few minutes walk later. A very gentle climb, it's cool, quick, but no views. But very welcome when the legs get a bit tired). I took a photo of one of the ceramic murals on the sea front so that Garth gets an idea how to fix ours to the wall when we get home.

After a superb fish dinner in the main square, many wines and a limoncello to finish off, we headed home to pack. Boo hoo! We will really miss little Atrani - our beautiful apartment, the friendly people, and the endless stairs.
