Off to Bologna

Sorrento, Campania, Italy
Yesterday we caught a local bus up to a small town called Sant Agata to do a walk to a monastery offering fabulous views from its lookout. It is one of the narrowest parts of the peninsula and from up high, you can see the sea on both sides (Gulf of Naples and Gulf of Salerno), plus many of the little towns, and the city of Naples, Mt Vesuvius etc.

We tried to follow a small path rather than the narrow road, but it petered out, but not quickly enough - a one metre long black snake fell out of the tree in front of me, then a car stopped and threw open its door flicking out a huge white spider, then just to make it even better, an Alsatian the size of a house barked ferociously at us (ok, it was behind bars, but that is irrelevant!) . By the time I got to the lookout, I was looking for a very stiff drink!!! Thankfully the view was worth the heart palpitations.

We also visited the church in St Agata as it has a lovely altar made of marble, mother of pearl and semi-precious stones. On the way back home, we got off the bus at a high part overlooking Sorrento and had the much needed drink in a beautiful hotel (the Hotel Belair) watching the boats coming in and out of the harbour. It was a beautiful view (and hotel) - so peaceful and pretty.

We also visited the inlaid wood museum to understand the intricacies of making some of the furniture, plates and pictures we have seen in the shops in Sorrento. The museum has a lot of information on the different techniques used to cut out tiny intricate designs from different woods, including tiny mosaic squares, flowers, and people with many tiny pieces of wood making up facial features, clothes etc. There was an exhibition of inlaid furniture pieces made over the last two centuries, as well as some pictures of furniture that is now displayed at other museums (some that we have seen in other countries, without realising the amount of work that had gone into the making of the piece). We then went and looked at some of the shops to see what the prices of tables were, but decided that the ones we liked at thousands of euro were a tad outside our budget!

Today we bid our apartment goodbye to catch a couple of trains to Bologna. We made the most of the deck, having dinner last night and breakfast this morning enjoying the very warm stream of air blowing over us while we sat watching the lights and view below us (it was 27 degrees last night, not quite like the Blue Mountains where they apparently had snow yesterday!!).
