Split, Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia
We caught the local ferry to Split and enjoyed a great day wandering around the beautiful Venetian influenced city.
We did a walking tour of Diocletian’s Palace which is a wonderfully preserved complex that Roman Emperor Diocletian built in 305 AD for his retirement.
Fun Fact: Diocletian rose through the ranks of the military and ruled between 284-305 AD and as Emperor did 3 very smart things…he chose to co-rule with his fellow officer Maximian; he abdicated voluntarily; and he refused all entreaties by Rome to return to power. Consequently he enjoyed a long and happy retirement in his extensive palace in Split.
