Off to Old Town

Limassol, Limassol, Cyprus
Today we headed to the Jasmine early to be there before the tour group from the Ukraine--we wanted to see if there was actually food available.  Well there was--so our assumption that the young people in the group were "snarfing" down all the food appeared to be correct.  While we were there and almost finished with our food and coffee, the group arrived--wow the food began to disappear FAST!!!
Today was a busy day of meetings with students to discuss their projects.  I did have some time during lunch so I met Mike and Tammy and we headed to Mel's Place, aka the Cutty Sark Bar and Grill.  Tammy opted for the fish fingers (I always think of fish whose fingers have been removed although that makes no sense as fish don't have fingers!) with chips, salad, and a Brandy Sour. I had a cod filet, chips, salad and a bottle of water (I have to go back to work!), and Mike had dolmades, chips and a large Keo beer. It is so lovely to sit on the patio under the awning and enjoy the weather, the food, and the good company.
While I met with students again this afternoon, Tammy went to the pool to just lounge around.  The Jasmine has a lovely pool area.  Mike headed up to Carrefours grocery to return the hair dryer (He had bought a hair dryer for me and Tammy the first day as there wasn't one available in our room. Of course as soon as he bought one for us, Ms. Kiki arrived with one for us to use. Never fails, does it?)  Sadly he couldn't exchange the hair dryer for euros so we now have a new, lovely digital kitchen scale.  Everyone goes to Europe to buy a kitchen scale, don't they? :)
Once the meetings were over we all met back up, caught the bus, and headed to Old Town to shop around.  We missed our stop as they have renovated much of the area and the bus no longer stops at the circle near the castle.  The bus goes on to the new port where we hopped off--otherwise we would have had to ride all the way to the mall which is way further out.  We walked back to the market area and shopped around.  Then we headed to the area around the Old Market where there are restaurants to see if Barbara and Emily who run Sepia (formerly Diogene's Lantern) were there today.  As they were we sat and had a drink and chatted with them.  We have known them since Mike's first visit to Cyprus back in 2009.  Barbara is from Scotland and is married to Mel's brother (Mel of Cutty Sark Bar & Grill) and Emily is her daughter.
Then on we went to the area around the Castle to search for a dinner place--We decided on a restaurant called To Frourio which is along the side of the Medieval Castle.  It was so nice sitting outside in the warm night.  Tonight we had hummus and pita plus grilled mushrooms as appetisers and a Cypriot white wine called Thisbe.  I drank this wine the first time I came to Cyprus--back in 2008 with Sandy.   It is a delicious semi-sweet white wine.  For dinner Mike had moussaka, Tammy had lamb chops, chips, and salad, and I had grilled Tsipoura (some type of fish which of course came with its head attached--I hate that!. Do I want to have my dinner look at me?  No no no!).  I also had chips and salad.  When we finished they brought us some teensy pieces of kataifi for dessert--yum yum!  If you don't know that dessert, it is similar to baklava but has what appears to be shredded wheat on the outside.  Sounds weird but is actually quite good.  They had the funniest sign up on the wall--I've included a photo--What do you all think they were trying to say?
Time to head slowly home through the warm Cypriot night.  On the way we stopped in the few stores in Old Town that were still open--it is early in the year for all the stores to stay open very late.  They will as the season revs up.  Once again we have had a lovely day and were thinking about what we shall do tomorrow.
