Another early day as this morning's schedule is packed. The one nice thing about Cyprus days, though, is there is always a long lunch time. Today the meetings ended at 11:15 and weren't going to restart until 3 p.m.! What a civilised way to have meetings, don't you think? Anyway, once the morning meetings were finished, Mike, Tammy, and I caught the bus to head out to the Amathus area.
We were going to do a quick visit to the archaeological site and then have lunch, but there is a storm brewing. So we decided that the best idea would be to go straight to the restaurant--food or archaeology, which shall it be? Of course you all knew which was going to win, didn't you?
The restaurant is known as Pasalimani Taverna and is right on the Mediterranean. Sandy and I found this restaurant in 2008 and I have been going there each time I return to Cyprus. We love their set menu, the outside seating with grape vines over us, the view of the Mediterranean, the pelicans, and of course the good food and wine! Our choice today for the set menu was hummus and tzatziki with pita for me and Tammy and avgouleme (chicken soup) for Mike. The food was delicious but we kept watching the sky as the clouds began to roll in.
Before the main meal arrived we moved to the tables that had a tarp covering them as it had begun to rain lightly. For lunch Tammy had lamb chops with chips and salad, and Mike and I both had the cod filet with chips and salad. And of course we had the "never-ending" jug of white wine. For every two set meals, you get wine--not a glass each but a jug of wine to share! It is WAY more wine that we need but we of course try to finish it all. As usual the food was good! But just before we could eat dessert the rain began and it was heavy and there was lightening!!! Eek! It's rather fascinating to see the lightening arc into the sea, though. But the rain is too heavy to stay outside so we grabbed our wine and ran into the inside part of the restaurant. Not only is it raining but the temperature is dropping so we are getting rather chilled. Not to be deterred we had our dessert while we watched the rain come down outside the windows--Tammy and I had the fresh fruit which is watermelon at this time of year and Mike had raspberry ice cream.
It is very odd for it to be raining at this time of year--in Cyprus the rains usually come between late October and early March--by this time of year the country is dry and won't see rain again until the fall. But not this year, they keep saying to us that the weather is very odd.
Once the rain had eased we headed to the bus stop. It is still raining lightly and as we don't have umbrellas we were wet and cold by the time we got to the bus stop. Finally the bus arrived and we were back at the hotel in time for me to take a quick nap and get warm.
Then it is back to the GCIS for meetings until about 7 p.m. We are supposed to meet at Socrates' house at 7:15 but we aren't able to get there until closer to 7:30. As Xenia and the children aren't quite ready we sit on their patio with Socrates and have apple mojitos--this is a first and they are delicious. I love mango mojitos and didn't think this would be very good, but I was definitely mistaken.
About 8 p.m. we all hopped in cars and were off to an art exhibit opening. Six of Xenia's students have submitted art work to be judged at the end of the year. This exhibit is their work and is fascinating. There were some very talented young people showing their work.
We especially found the books they had created explaining how they chose the subject and how they had developed their ideas as very interesting and enlightening.
About 9:30, we, along with 7 of Xenia's teachers, walked a couple of blocks to Saripola street to have dinner at the Blue Apple Club. This is a restaurant/bar across from Sepia--this area of the city which was rather quiet during the day is a really happening place at night now. Who knew? There was lots of loud music and many young people milling around. We sat at high tables with uncomfortable metal stools! I know I sound like an old "fogie", don't I?
As usual, a huge amount of food was ordered for the group--several different salads and each of us ordered a main course along with several bottles of wine--Tammy and I had ordered Prawn fajitas and Mike had chicken fajitas--sounds strange to order fajitas in Cyprus, doesn't it? Well, yes it was and yes they were different. For one thing they had black olives in them and the sauce was not spicy but somewhat sweet--very different for sure. We were not impressed with this restaurant--they didn't bring the salads until after the main dishes came and they were VERY slow the whole time. Along with all the delays and the competing loud music from the various restaurants in the area it was very off-putting. Finally we headed to the Lobelia, arriving back there at midnight. The three of us decided that our days of enjoying "clubbing" are long behind us and that we prefer to sit with friends in a quieter place where we can chat!!!
