Making progress

Ban Phe, Thailand
Nothing very exciting today. I went down to the TEFL school to get some ideas on teaching opportunities. They said they could give me some days writing curriculum for and teaching a 1-2 day English camp in Rayong as a start which I filed as a maybe. The PR type guy interviewed me (he used to do PR for Barnaman Bailey circus) as he wanted to get some press on former students for promotional purposes. All very nice people.

Ji and I and one of Ji's new students from Russia named Alex had lunch in a little open air tiki type place on the beach. It must be so scary for them, they just got here 4 days ago, don't speak Thai, don't know anybody, no idea where to go to buy a Coke, or how much to pay for it.  Some of them seem so lost.

Ji and I planned to meet at 5 to go to the night market which we did. I ride on the back of her 100cc bike and pray alot. She bought tons of fresh vegetables, many for 5 baht/ a bag or bunch - maybe 15-20 cents. In typical Thai fashion, she made a mountain of steamed rice and at least 6 different dishes - only one of which I recognized, a great vegetable curry. Other dishes were also vegetarian as Ji's boyfriend doesn't eat hardly anything but. But all were delicious, though very spicey.

I have an interview at ECC in Rayong tomorrow, well actually today now. It's a language school. They teach private classes but mostly I think they hire their teachers out to corporations for English language training. I think Nike is one of their customers?

I don't know how I feel about teaching adults but maybe it's a new venue that I could learn to like.

Many of the "kids" (young twenties) at TEFL are doing online English lessons with Korean students. They arrange a time slot, materials and
curriculum are provided and they meet via web cam x number of days a week. I think maybe they get paid 10-15 dollars an hour, which over here is good money.

I shot out about 30 cv's online last night as if there were openings in International schools they would be good money and I am one of very few teachers who are qualified for these postions over here. However, my timing is off , they have already started their semester. Nevertheless, within 15 minutes of my email an Indian International school in Bangkok responded (this is 11 pm, mind you) and told me to be there at 11 am tomorrow morning. Since Bangkok is 2 1/2 hours away and I already have the ECC interview, I had to reschedule. But what principal is up reading school email at 11 pm?

I have to keep reminding myself that I've only really been in Ban Phe 2 days but in typical American fashion, I want things to move faster.

I did upgrade my room to air con as of tomorrow which is a good move I think. Although I did sleep 4 full hours before hosing down tonight. Yesterday, I wet my oldest t-shirt in the sink and wore it as I worked on the computer. That helped for a while.

The girl is supposed to have my good dress pressed tomorrow am. It got so wrinkled in the suitcase. But you never know with Thais - they are on flexy time. So maybe I'll go with plan B - not sure what that is but....
