Maha Sarakham, Maha Sarakham, Thailand
Things You Can't Get in Thailand:

-paper towels
-licensed Cd's, movies, computer games (seriously, you can only buy pirated copies as far as I have seen)
-an English newspaper   even though the Bangkok Post and The Nation are in English they don't have them way up here in the northeast
-real salt or salt shakers (they use fish sauce)
-blonde hair dye (very hard to find)
-acrylic nails (but wait, aren't all nail techs in the US Asian?)
-shoes above size 7 or 8
-"western sizes"  - Thai XL is about equivalent to our S, possibly medium
-tampons     they don't believe in them
-file folders   they don't use them everything gets bound in large black binders and put on shelves with thousands of others
-refrigerated eggs      they just sit on the shelf next to the packaged goods
-real coffee, ground coffee or even black coffee   everything is 3 in 1 - includes sugar and cremora
-tea bags  although there's plenty of lime green and orange colored tea
-canned goods   what little packaged goods they have come in plastic or foil bags - noodles, dish/laundry detergent, body wash
-mops they just use cloths
- regular brooms   they use handmade 'witches' brooms'
- real bread    you can buy white wonder bread made from processed air in packages of about 6 or 8 slices but it isn't worth it Thais don't eat it
-mp3 songs and ring tones   they won't let you download them in 'your country'
- can't pay anything by check, traveler's checks, or credit card can use credit cards in big cities, though your pay is automatically sent to your bank account and you debit out your money from the ATM    I don't know if they even have checks
- bleach   although they have one antiseptic cleaner called Dettol
- cheap microwaves   they cost $100-200 here!
- chocolate   for obvious reasons
- ketchup     but you can get loads of chili sauce
- pantyhose    too hot, I guess
-backpacks    very few anyway nobody uses them and they think I am traveling because I carry one "Where are you going?"
-toilet paper   -   only in big western stores, they just spray and go and of course, always remember to keep a supply in your pocket when traveling
-carpet or rugs - marble floors everywhere
-books in English - 'nuff said
-pocket calendars -?
-large sizes of anything - I buy milk every 2/3 days, mouthwash and deodorant weekly   peroxide and rubbing alcohol come in about 3 oz bottles
-razors - hard to find, Thai women have no hair at all on their arms and very little on their legs
-top sheets - they only use bottom sheets with 2 reg pillow cases and 2 bolster pillow cases (those long tubular pillows)
-china dishes - you're in the land of melmaime here
-STOVES! - simply not used   you cannot even buy an electric burner here although you can buy gas 'jik' stoves (like a one burner barbecue) they don't call them stoves, they call them 'cookers'
-hot water - really not needed   no restaurants have hot water, many don't have running water at all   hotels and apartments have a small box the size of a box of cornflakes attached to the shower nozzle which heats the water on demand
-shower stalls   since everything is marble, the shower head is right in the bathroom wall and there's a drain in the corner if there is a toilet paper dispenser, it's covered with a metal shield and you don't leave any toiletries or anything in your bathroom
-2 piece bathing suits, bikinis, speedos despite the western image of Thailand, they are VERY conservative, modest people   you will never see a Thai in shorts
-flowers - I have yet to see floral bouquets anywhere    I guess there are too many beautiful wild flowers although you can buy floral leis "for the Buddah" everywhere, they even come up to the car window at intersections sellling them Thais put them on their little altar at home
-Bridal gowns to buy - everybody rents them here
-large (regular size) dinner napkins - most restaurants have a roll of toilet paper on the table or little 3x5 inch single ply pink 'napkins'  you need about 4 to wipe your mouth each time
- gas stations (for cars) are rare and located outside of town;  for your motorbike, you buy a whiskey bottle full of gasoline from a table alongside the road
- crying children   I don't know why, I've never heard a child cry here, especially over the age of 2 and whining is unheard of, too
-eyeglasses   hardly anybody wears them
- sport clothes, hiking shoes, etc, especially for women    many times I think they think that I am a lesbian with my llbean clothes
-diet soda - nowhere   not in stores, restaurants, 7-11
- butter     haven't seen it yet, maybe in big western stores
- pizza   there's a company in the cities called "Pizza Company"  - it's really Pizza Hut, same logo and all but since they can't maintain Pizza Hut standards here, they have to change the name
- fat people   again, 'nuff said
