Things I've seen in Thailand
-On a 100 cc Motorbike:
-4 people
-Mom, Dad and baby with a bottle
-barefoot drivers
-a guy with a 12 foot ladder (how does he go around the corner?)
-girls riding sidesaddle on the back in a skirt with sling back high
heels
-girls riding sidesaddle on the back in a skirt with sling back high
heels - reading a book!
-a guy with 6 wooden chaise lounges, geometrically stacked and tied
together, strapped to the side of his motorbike
-side-cars full of ice cream for sale or hot coals to cook foods to
sell on the streets or at the beach
-girls talking on the cell phone while driving a motorbike
- almost never a helmet
-two (separate) people lying in the road after a motorbike accident
-men in pink shirts driving hot pink buses or pink motorbikes - they love pink here Pink doesn't seem to be a 'feminine' color here
- many pink cars
-songtaews (pick up truck beds) with 20+ people in them
-Pickups with a huge pig in the back
-Pickups with signs (I don't know what they say) blaring voices and music
over a loudspeaker (ditto) pulling a cart with a goat in it ???
Are they advertising something? Is there a festival? Was it All
Goat's Day? Was it a political statement?
-Elephants going their rounds - usually in the early morning
-Wild dogs everywhere they even come into the open air restaurants for a
fallen treat, but they never bother anyone
-Monks smoking cigarettes
-Cute little brown bottomed naked babies
-Babies with silver bracelets and bells on their feet so momma knows when
they wake up and start rutching around
-Many lady construction workers a teacher says women are the backbone
of Thailand and Thai men are all silly fools
-Fried chicken feet (toenails included) and pig intestines for sale
-Fried insects for sale
-Fried chicken skin 20 B a bag and oh, so decadent
-Fried chicken, pork, corn on a stick
-Hard boiled eggs on a stick (Thais snack all day long, they fire up the grills in the early am and people are eating sticks of chicken on their
way to work or school)
-Coke (or whiskey) in a plastic bag with a straw
-More plastic chairs than in the rest of the world combined (they even
cover them in satin with beautiful gold lame' bows
for weddings and special occasion
-really, really bad karaoke singers are all Thais genetically tone deaf?
- electric woks but not electric frying pans so I bought an electric wok and fry an egg up on the sides - it works
-Little boys with 'nok' hairstyles - head shaved all but for a circle of hair
at the top , tied in a pig tail or pony tail Thais are very
proud of their heritage and this is a traditional Thai hairstyle
from ancient times
-University level girls all dressed in identical black skirts and starched white
blouses with identical shoes and university pins all in the exact
same spot all with the exact same ear-length straight hair
-Grown women with Hello Kitty purses (they're big on cartoon characters
here)
-Beautifully scrubbed and starched children coming out of a straw-roofed,
corrugated metal home with no electricity or running water
-The scrawniest chickens you ever saw - I guess they don't feed them all
the hormone infused food we feed ours
-Police out en masse to boost their income with fresh bribes. You can pay
your ticket at the police station (and stand in line for hours and
it may be in the next town) or you can
can pay it directly to the police officer. If you plead your case, he may give you a "discount" on your bribe. They said to always tell
them you're a teacher, as there is great respect for teachers in
Thailand and your 500 B 'fine' will usually be reduced to 100B.
-Hundreds of shoes outside a store, school, beauty parlor. Just don't wear
them inside.
-Corn and red beans on ice cream and in yogurt. They're considered sweet here.
-Fried corn pie at McDonald's. But no apple or cherry.
-Little bags of chili or chili/sugar/salt with all 'take away' food.
-Huge slabs of dead animal carcass hanging out in the air for all the flies to
feast on. Just tell the man what you want and take it home.
-Tiny little egg-sized eggplants. Very good.
-Two foot long string beans. They don't have regular sizes.
-Gigantic carrots - maybe a foot long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
-Pink hard boiled eggs. They dye them so you can tell the difference.
-Big vats of hot bubbling frying oil in the middle of the path at the night
markets. Doesn't anyone ever get burned?
-Strange fruits - durian (smells like an outhouse, there are signs on the
buses and trains,"no durian on the bus/train"), dragon fruit
(delicious, looks like the plant worlds' answer to the dalmation),
loganberries, custard apple, tamarinds - but no berries!
-strange looking pencil sharpeners and hole punches that I examine for 15 minutes before finally asking someone how they work who would ever think a college graduate couldn't figure out a pencil sharpener?
And of course, where would Thailand be without squat toilets and little dippers to rinse with!
