The arrivals hall at the airport was hilarious, a room, a few seats and a low slung table as the luggage collection point and actually a surprisingly clean toilet (although you did have to put your hand in the cistern to flush it!
Although there were a total of 10 bags coming off the plane, mine was one of the last to make it onto the shelf
..... I think I must be jinxed!!
We were met by a driver who escorted us to the rainforest lodge office. We signed our lives away in a very posh waiting room and the we were off on our 2hr 30min 4x4 journey up to the lodge, 20mins on Tarmac the rest in forestry roads. It was a tad bumpy to say the least. But on the way we saw both short and long tailed macaques as well as some incredible trees, too big to fit in a photo!!
On arrival we were treated by Daniel with banana leaf necklaces to welcome us. A cold flannel and a lemon grass and ginger refresher were most welcome. The ins and outs of the lodge were explained and we met our guide for the 3 days. we were shown to our room and had 2hrs to kill before lunch. We slept!!
Lunch consisted of a buffet, lovely food, but after some rice and curry and a slice of melon I was quite content.
Post lunch we went on a mission to the lodge shop to acquire us both a pair of leach socks as everyone was shocked we did not have any with us. We had no idea what we were looking for so had to ask for some help. They are basically cotton, Christmas Stocking shaped items with drawstrings to secure them below the knee. Warn inside the shoes and outside the trousers. Odd!! Very odd!!
Looking amazing in our getup we were off for a walk into the rainforest
. The introduction trail, for the Newbies was interesting with giant millipedes, some of Syafiq's (the guide) 'favourite' trees and what not to touch as the toxins may kill you but a radio call went out that the had sited a red macaque of some description, so the 6 of us in our group (another couple on honeymoon, Emily and James and a couple traveling for 9 weeks, Cecile and Matt) sped over to where it was. There were actually a family of them, happily munching their lunch. With so many people watching, they moved on, over our heads, leaping from branch to branch. We continued on a lower level trek, with lots of mud and leaches around. Many people seemed quite paranoid abt the leaches, but they can't really hurt you, so I just flicked any off that decided to come and say hello!!
It was very muggy, so when we returned to the lodge with some time until tea, we filled our outside hot tub up (took forever!!) and sat with a cuppa, enjoying the forest and river view.
Dinner
.... so much food again!! The highlight for me .... beef satay!! Cooked fresh in a grill, by a lovely guy with a huge smile. He cooked it extra well done for me and added some extra satay sauce to the meat as it cooked!! We had a free cocktail again as it was our honeymoon and the waiter must have apologised abt 50 times for there being no flowers on our table!! It was quite alright, we were happy not to be fussed over. I did however have 3 deserts that night, 2x meringues with cream and nuts and 1x fresh papaya! Not all bad. The meringue was bloody amazing though, fingers crossed it is there tomoz night too!!
We were shattered by this point but still went out on a night drive on an open truck, with Helen the Guide armed with a gazillion candle strength torch, however with a near full moon, casting shadows where there were no lights, it was going to be hard to see anything. We did however spy (through reflective eyes) a flying squirrel which was very exciting. Then it was most definitely sleep time!!
