Day 4

Brolgas dancing

Overcast this morning and a reasonable drive ahead of us . We bade our farewells to the nice girls at the Takarakka resort, packed up pretty quickly and hit the dirt. It's about 40km from the resort back to the highway, probably about half of it being gravel road. We overtook a van who had stopped to take pictures of some cows…they must come from Lapland or somewhere. A little firther on we came across a pair of brolgas, one of which was doing an impersonation of Jerry Lewis on ice! Still, the other one seemed impressed!

We refuelled at Roleston where I also sated my craving for corn chips. Roleston is a little like Coolah but smaller if you can envision that!

On we trundled until Emerald, GG continually trying to keep score of the number of grey nomads compared to other traffic – and continually forgetting and losing track when another anecdote popped into his head!

As we arrived at Emerald G realised he couldn’t find his hat, an heirloom handed down from an uncle . The next little while was passed to the sound of whirring cogs as he thought long and hard about where it could be, culminating in a call to Takarakka to see if anyone had handed one in, left a message.

Theo’s café lived up to its good rating on Tripadvisor and we were pretty full of tasty tucker (and a bit poorer) when we headed back to the car!

The after lunch travel was more up and down than we expected with some very long straights in pretty hard country with a lot of ironbark out past Alpha, a small place we refuelled. Large areas of regeneration possibly indicating the state of drought and destocking.

As I write this G is singing Old McDonald’s Farm, "…had some wheat, with a here and a there, here a , there a , everywhere a …" – now he’s quoting a bush ballad! Life’s never dull on a road trip with G!

We’re over the tropic of Capricorn now, have travelled 1512km to here and we have lots of blue sky and puffy clouds after a cloudy morning, pretty nice just cruising along listening to G’s variation on the Hokey Pokey…

Barcaldine tonight and an hour to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach tomorrow.

Well bloody Murphy has struck, my phone has lost the ability to connect to the network! It was working fine in the car then lost connection and never picked it up again! I am very unamused.

We’re camped at Barcaldine showgrounds, electricity, water, hot showers and the dulcet tones of a goods train trundling close by.

It’s becoming very breezy here tonight, we may have a slightly unsettled night’s sleep
