Day 17 - Back in Eastland

Another chilly start in Nyngan this morning . After convincing GG to park near the amenities instead of a cut lunch away, we'd had a relatively peaceful night. A hoon doing burnouts in the distance and a rooster with a death wish, being our only major disturbances.

After what could best be described as a perfunctory welcome and at worst a particularly frosty one, we found the amenities relatively new but with a few rough edges, a bit like Miley Cyrus.   GG thought that something had died in one of the toilets (the one that was out order) – I must admit that I didn’t notice it but then my olfactory senses have been subject to some abuse in recent days with the chilli concoctions being prepared by my gastronomic offsider.

Anyway, we were on the road early, 8am in fact, primarily thanks to the rooster.

It was a good thing I guess, we have a long drive today to be at G’s place tonight. We worked out last night that the distance we did yesterday and the distance we plan to do today differ only by 2km! We have essentially come right across NSW in two days .

We passed through Narromine which is a nice town that actually seems to have some civic pride. When we arrived in west Dubbo we were in the midst of a deep and meaningful discussion and almost took the wrong road. We were saved by my navigator before its battery ran out.

Off we went to Dunedoo where to GG’s delight we found a bakery "nicer bread at bakeries…" and we had a very enjoyable coffee and G was able to satisfy a craving for an iced finger bun while I demolished a blueberry muffin!

Having refuelled at Trangie we thought we’d keep going and have late lunch in the lower Hunter. I eventually handed over the wheel at Jerry’s Plains around 2pm and was pretty glad of it!

Some minor excitement ensued when we approached the M15 motorway west of Branxton and peculiar road markings that looked like a painted median strip (but which were probably designed to get your attention as you entered the busy highway from a far less busy road) had GG wondering where he was and a few moments of disorientation followed!

So here we are at "El Casa Goldrick", it's looking splendid I must say, we’ve survived the rigors of each other’s snoring, cold mornings, long distance driving, ridiculous fuel prices, roadhouse food, hiking up hill and down dale, jostling with bus tours for good spots to photograph things and we’re still talking and somewhat sad that it’s primarily over. Of course, I have a long drive home tomorrow to Grafton from here on the central coast, but that’s just a means to the end of returning to other people that I care about and miss…and of course, work!

So, check back to see if there are more photos because I’ll sort through some in the next couple of days and add the relevant and/or interesting ones.

Go and see it for yourself, it’s a good trip!
