Checking out Hailsham with Aunty Gwen

Hailsham, England, United Kingdom
Tuesday is Sue's golf day, so with Sue off to hit that little white ball around the course, the three of us went into Hailsham. This is the nearest town and where Aunty Gwen goes to shop. She does miss the closeness for shopping, of her former home in Swan Road Gloucester, and the friends she had made over her 50 years of living there. But one does have to make changes in ones life, and moving closer to her only child Sue, was the right decision four years ago. Aunty Gwen has a really lovely two bedroom bungalow in Badgers Walk, Deanland Park Village. Her outlook from the living area is very relaxing and she is only a short walk to Sue and Dave's home. Her bedroom and dressing room is fit for a little doll. Just perfect for Aunty Gwen! When she showed us through her little home, there on the shelf was a picture of all her 'Aussie' loved ones. When she wakes up each day, there they are looking at her. Coralie emailed Sue the photo that was taken of the 'Aussie Batten's' at Drummond Cove on Boxing Day 2015. Sue has had the canvas photo printed for her.

Hailsham has three of the supermarket chain stores, so there is plenty of choice for food shopping. We parked in a supermarket carpark and from there walked the Main Street. There was plenty happening with roadworks and new sidewalk paving, being laid around the town square. After a coffee at Aunty Gwen's favourite coffee shop 'Truffles' we walked back through a nice little arcade. A few nice shops were in this arcade and one was named 'Pumpkin Patch'. Different to our 'Pumpkin Patch' stores in Australia. This one was a patchwork store. Couldn't resist having a look in this store! Yes! I did come out with a little bag! An advent calendar panel, that hopefully I will get made up as a memento of our 2016 visit to the English Batten families.

It was back to Aunty Gwen's for lunch. We did check out the 'Village' facilities before lunch. There is a bowling green and residents were playing on the 'Boules Court' alongside. There is a heated swimming pool, snooker room and a bar and dining area. If we had been staying longer Aunty Gwen would have taken us to the restaurant for dinner on Friday night. This is where they have Karaoke on Friday nights and a little birdie told us that Ted took part in the Karaoke fun two years ago.

Sue rang us when she was on her way home from golf and we walked through the woodland to meet her. Sue planned to take us to a mystery location. Somewhere Aunty Gwen had not been to before. It was a home for injured or unwanted animals. At the 'Rayestede Centre'
animals are cared for and new homes found for them.  It covers an area of 43 acres. There were interactive areas, which were designed to educate children on the commitment of caring for a pet. There was a large picnic area and it would be a busy place on weekends with families visiting. Entry was by donation and it seemed the whole complex relied heavily on sponsorship, volunteers and donations.

We also visited 'The Farm' on the way, to purchase a couple of chickens to cook for dinner. Sue buys quite a lot of meat here. Fresh cows milk is sold at the farm, with the warning that it has not been treated. They were pressing apples. My goodness I would like to know that there was more hygienic cleaning of the apple juice before I would purchase it. The apples were being pressed by the same method that was used many moons ago. The juice was being caught in a plastic tub.

We spent another lovely evening chatting, after devouring the delicious roast meal Sue prepared. Whilst Sue was slaving away in the kitchen, Peter was organising a visit to Uncle Ken via cousin Sarah with Sues help, Aunty Gwen and I were chatting in the beautiful living area and Dave was doing some extra work for the business in their upstairs home office. Sue and Dave actually started their insurance brokerage business from their home. 15 years ago they undertook major renovations, which included the upstairs office. They have both been very successful and the business now employs four others and operates from a building in Uckfield. We did actually come home via the office, so we could see the changes that have recently been made. The business is now being operated from downstairs and the upstairs space has been leased out. Sue actually purchased the business from David Haskoll and the business is still operated in that name. The business owns their section of the building they are operating from.

Peter and Sue between them managed to make phone calls to Uncle Ken and Sarah and we are hopeful we will be able to visit them on Thursday. We have had another lovely day. We have not been to the East Sussex county of England before.
