Peter meets a cousin for the first time...

Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom
Another 'Goodbye' this morning. This time to Aunty Gwen, daughter Sue and her husband Dave. We have had three very enjoyable nights staying with Sue and Dave, in their lovely home. Our stay has been as enjoyable as our visits have been with all the other relatives. Amazing hospitality and by the time we left, we really felt like we had got to know each other. We are sure Sue and Dave will visit Australia sometime and we know that they would like to be able to bring Aunty Gwen, but we are not sure she thinks she could make the trip.

Peter has been able to organise a visit to his cousin Sarah's home in Portsmouth today, so we have cut our visit to the next cousin short by a day, to include this catch-up. Sarah is the eldest daughter of John's youngest brother Ken. Sarah is a Dr and retired from general practice on the 1st July. Her husband Rifky is a gynecologist, who was operating this afternoon, so we have not been able to meet Rifky. Rifky is mostly involved in teaching this days and Sarah said "He loves it and is very good at it". He was asked to write the curriculum for an increased two years of study in his field of teaching. It was launched this week.

Sarah picked up her Mum and Dad this morning from Waterlooville, which is about 10 minutes away from her home. We have not met her Mum Helen before and have only met with Uncle Ken once, when he came to Aunty Ede's in London in 1984. Every year we send each other news at Christmas. Aunty Helen has had three minor strokes over the last few months. She has not been affected badly, but she is quite frail. Sarah loves family, although she has no children of her own. She is really interested in the family history and I was happy to share some dates from my 'Families App' this afternoon. She loved seeing all the photos of the family back home, as did Uncle Ken and Aunty Helen.

We spent 6 hours with them, enjoying a delicious hot lunch and two servings of dessert! How do you say "No" when family have gone to so much trouble preparing food?

We left Sarah's at 5.00pm with the intention of staying somewhere in Oxford. Sarah thought we may have had delays with traffic, but the traffic was worse if you were travelling in the other direction. We arrived at about 6.30pm and managed to get a room at the Travelodge on the outskirts of Oxford. It was 'Perfect' and we will be on our way to Leicester in the morning.

Have been off the radar for a bit, but still reading your stories when I can. How precious is it to catch up with relatives in the mother land. 4 weeks to go. Seems like you've been away forever but you're having an amazing holiday. Enjoy whatever comes next.
