Wetherby, England, United Kingdom
We weren't in any hurry to leave 'Tivey Farm' this morning as we had told Gill and Carl we would be in Yorkshire by mid afternoon. Peter checked on the pheasants before we left and did what had to be done. Brenda had a phone call from Clifton to say it was too misty for the grouse shoot in Perth, asking that she contact the insurance company. The 'Shoot Group' take out insurance in case this happens, as it is an expensive shoot. They were going to stay an extra day now, in the hope their 'shoot' could happen on Tuesday. Brenda is off down to daughter Jane's tonight, as granddaughter Hannah was one on Saturday. Now who will look after the pheasants? There are other 'shoot' friends we are sure. Found out later in the week the 'grouse shoot' didn't eventuate. Damn Scottish weather!

We had a good trip on the motorway and decided to exit near Doncaster and have some lunch and a break. We chose the small village of New Eldlington. Coal mining was big in this area and there was a memorial to the coal miners in the Main Street. It provided history of the Yorkshire Main Colliery from 1909 - 1985. The town was very derelict. Cheap housing we decided. Lots of people in the street on gophers also.

We decided to stop in the village of Wetherby, as we needed to purchase a few things. What a pretty town Wetherby is. This is where Gill and Carl have purchased a home together. By the end of our stay with them, we had definitely decided this was a lovely area of England. We phoned Gill to see if she wanted us to bring anything from town. To our surprise she said she would walk down and meet us beside the river. It would only take her 10 minutes.

It was hugs and kisses once again. Gill took us along the edge of the Wharfe River to where she plays tennis. It is right beside the river and on a Boxing Day 2015, they had torrential rain all day and the river flooded, causing substantial damage. The whole tennis courts where flooded. Out onto the playing fields near the river as well. Lots of damage to the town. Some of the houses also had water damage on their lower level. In the UK ones home is only a house if it is two story, otherwise it is a bungalow.

Wetherby Bridge is a Grade II listed ancient monument, which has spanned the river Wharfe for more than 700 years. The river, which forms part of the boundary between West and North Yorkshire, has a name of Celtic origin which means twisting or winding. The bridge has 13th-century origins. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and has been widened twice, first in 1773 and again in 1826. Its repair has been a contentious political issue in the past.  There is an old water wheel on the edge of the river and the following information was on the plaque:  The cog wheel was unearthed in 1991 and it was refurbished by the Wetherby Weir PreservationTrust. When working the wheel was turned by a shaft which came directly from the water wheel of the mill.

The memorial is situated on Boston Road, Wetherby, West Yorkshire, at the end of the bridge crossing the River Wharfe. The memorial represents Victory with two bronze lions mounted on a plinth of Portland stone. Standing at 22 feet in height, the structure weighs in excess of 33 tons.

Then it was home to meet Carl and catch up on all the family news and be shown over their home. It is lovely. One of the reasons they purchased this home, is because it has been renovated to allow as much light as possible into the home. The home was purchased by renovators, following the death of an elderly lady. Carl and Gill purchased it 4 years ago. The new kitchen and extension to the house, has brought the light into the home. The new roof over the patio area is excellent. It is not the corrugated iron that Ted suggested, but the material chosen is perfect. Ted's idea has really solved the water problem and made the area so nice. We enjoyed time sitting out there on all but one day of our stay. Dinner on our first night was delicious chicken pie and veges. Gill is the best pastry cook! Once again we were treated to fine wine!

I hope Peter has been bragging about his roses when he sees these beautiful gardens.
We are missing you, but glad you are having fun.Jenny reckons you sent a bit of the English cold to the Geraldton Bowling Club yesterday - bitterly cold wind but a lovely blue sky.
