Just the two of us.....a day of exploring York

York, England, United Kingdom
Today the two of us went to the city of York for the day. We did get a couple of loads of washing done and on the line before we went. The forecast was for a fine day, but it was very misty until about 9.30am. The 'laundry' is a whole lot easier when you have the hospitality of the relies.

We decided (following Gill's advice) that we would not try to fit too much into our day! The National Railway Museum and the York Minster would be enough for one day. It was a relatively stress free drive to the National Railway Museum and one is able to park there all day for 9 pound.

Lots of train engines and carriages to look at as you would expect. We were disappointed that the Scotsman Flying Lady was not at the Museum. Being a National Museum, different engines visit different parts of the country, at different times. This engine was actually at the Severn Railway Museum, the Museum Peter had visited on their last daily excursion, whilst at the conference in Warwick.

The story attached to this steam engine is really interesting and the fact that it actually went to Alice Springs. There was a photo of an aboriginal warrior in traditional dress standing on the front of the steam engine, which was even more interesting for these two Aussies.

After a bite of lunch we walked into the city of York and up to the Minster. Another interesting fact that it is called a 'Minster' and not a Cathedral.  'Minster' is an honorific title given to particular churches in England. The term is first found in royal foundation charters of the 7th century.

Peter needed a new rain jacket and we did find a store with just what he needed for the trip to Ireland, quite quickly. I say about the 'quite quickly', because I was convinced we wouldn't find anything in the 'middle range' price bracket. There are some very exclusive shops in York and I think I could wander around the streets for the day and make a purchase or two!

On our way back to the Railway Museum we walked a section of the 'City Wall'. Much of the wall was destroyed during WWII, but you can't visit York without a walk on the wall.

In the evening we dined at the Scotsman Pub about a 10 minute drive from Gill and Carl's. We had a lovely meal with Carl's sister and her partner Andy. Pete won the paying battle at this dinner and snuck off and paid before anyone realised what he was up to. Sometimes we have had a win!

Tracy and Andy came back to Wetherby for a while and we talked about Carl's families recent trip to South Africa. Andy had managed to get some great snaps of animals.

Another great day in this Northern county of England.
