Renmark, South Australia, Australia
We decided over breakfast that before we left the Mildura region, we needed to visit Wentworth and view the junction of the Darling River and the Murray, the two greatest rivers in Australia. We could go out on Silver City Highway and then get back onto the Sturt Highway via Merbein. We were so glad we did go the extra 35 kms! The river was dead flat until a big houseboat came cruising by. We've decided a trip on the Murray on a houseboat is on the 'Bucket List'. Probably with the golf sticks and bowls!    We haven't been walking much over the last week, so a walk down to the weir and back gave us a bit of exercise before we set off for Renmark. It was 3,200 steps recorded on the fitbit. Just before we got back to the caravan we commented on the effective pattern that had been made on the bank with coloured woodchips. Easy maintenance etc. There was this sign saying take a photo here and there was a spot on the ground saying "Feet Here". We were a bit puzzled about what we were taking a photo of and then all was revealed! The coloured woodchips on the bank lined up with the roofs of the houses and the trees. Yes Jenny....."It was very clever"!   We crossed the Murray again at Merbein and this bridge was single lane and there was a traffic light either end. Farmers were working on either side of the Sturt Highway.  Really broad acre farming and a bit of a mixed bag again as far as crops germinating etc. One farmer was ploughing this really big paddock, on which there was a really good germination. Strange to see really!  He's definitely from the old school!  When we were close to the river there were vineyards again and mostly almond trees. A few hectares of citrus. We stopped for lunch just before the South Australian border, as it turned out. The phones had already gone back half an hour, so we knew we were close.  It was an early lunch at 11.30am.  We had no sooner started back on the highway than the SA border sign came up and then there was the Quarantine Station.  It is a really big one on the Sturt Highway.  We had cooked up our veges and fruit last night. We had purchased mandarins from 'Orange World' though, as Mario said "They would be okay if he did us a certificate".   There was not a problem, it was all in order and the Quarantine Officer was happy when he saw the stewed fruit and the pumpkin soup in the fridge.  He didn't look in the cupboards for any potatoes or onions, but there wasn't any to find anyway.  We are attempting to do the right thing!  We had decided we would stay in Renmark just for one night and we had decided on another Big4 park.  Well is this one something and have we got a magical site?  We paid a few dollars more to be right on the river!  What the hec!  It is so lovely we are going to stay a second night.  The kids have had there fishing rods in the river, along with Mum's and Dad's and grandparents.  Others laying back reading.  Then there was the couple next door.  He had his shirt off reading his Kindle down on the edge of the river and she was strutting around in one of those stretchy short skirts.  Pete had noticed the skirt!  There's still a bit of life in the old boy!  Now this couple are not young, probably in their late forties, early fifties.  I got a bit envious later!  She sat on his knee or both knees and he was massaging her back!  Might have to get one of those skirts!
Funny they ended up back in the caravan, although it was time to think about dinner!   12 photos
