Amidst Christening party planning, we completed the bow lettering on the starboard side from the dock. Dave also applied his recently received Virginia fishing license sticker to its required position on the bow. We visited Norfolk City Hall on Tuesday, March 27 to register for Personal Property Tax and pay $25 for the Norfolk decal.
The big focus for the weekend was the Christening party being held on Saturday, March 31
. Superstition still plays a significant role in boaters' lives. Since the beginning of time, sailors have sworn that there are unlucky ships and the unluckiest ships of all are those who have defied the gods and changed their names.
According to legend, each and every vessel is recorded by name in the Ledger of the Deep and is known personally to Poseidon, or Neptune, the god of the sea. The belief is that, if you wish to change the name of your boat, the first thing you must do is to purge its name from the Ledger of the Deep and from Neptune's memory. This is an involved process beginning with the removal or obliteration of every trace of the boat's current identity. A de-naming ceremony is then held with some good champagne sprayed on the bow-the gods despise cheapskates so you must buy additional bottles for your own and your guests' consumption. A few words to Mighty Neptune, king of all that moves in or on the waves and Mighty Aeolus, guardian of the winds and all that blows before them, work best. Then you are free to christen your boat with a new name.
