Memorial Day Weekend Cruise

Norfolk, Virginia, United States
We had good weather this weekend with temperatures in the mid 80s and low 60s at night. This would be the first weekend that we took a "private" (no guests) cruise! We left the marina in mid-morning for a sail to Wilton Creek on the Piankatank River off the Chesapeake Bay. Winds were SSW 5-20 kt. We anchored on Wilton Creek overnight, a very pristine anchorage that we really liked.

We departed the following morning around 7 am to head across the Bay on SW winds 5-15 kt to Kiptopeke State Park south of Cape Charles VA where the famous "concrete ships" create a breakwater . We anchored for the night and enjoyed having John and Joan (who anchored nearby) over for dinner. We had made arrangements to meet them at Kiptopeke where they sailed from their home in Norfolk on their Catalina Sutra. We enjoyed our stay until the flies arrived. Then it became miserable. It must have been the month when all the resident flies gave birth because we became overwhelmed with them (the garbage type of flies).  They are probably drawn to live in the area because of the popular park and beach at this anchorage.

We sailed back together to Willoughby Bay/Norfolk on Sunday on SW winds 10-15 kts arriving around 3 pm. We had a chance to take video and pictures of each other which we'll share with you soon!

Our family of ducklings are having fun with a swamped wooden skiff on the opposite side of our dock!
